Coaches: Listen… Just Listen…Then Listen Again… Listen Once More….
I remember when my husband, a realtor for 20+ years, told me about training himself to LISTEN THOROUGHLY to his buyers. He had to learn to consciously stop his mind’s desire to run ahead and mentally choose houses for his clients WHILE they were still describing what they wanted. Once he learned this, it saved his clients (and him) precious time and money.
Then there was this nun in elementary school who whacked me on the head with a ruler and said, “God gave you TWO ears and ONE mouth, Linda, so you MUST listen twice as much as you talk!” Wise words, and the whack imprinted their memory…on…I mean, in my head.
The power of listening was the subject of a coaching blog that caught my attention this week, and as simple as it sounds, listening well is an art that requires patience and focus. Not bringing our own agenda into the listening process would be like me, a child talking in class, not getting caught by the nun….highly improbable.
Good coaching depends on listening, yes? What is the secret to becoming a world-class listener? And how do you listen between the lines? Tell me. I’ll be listening.
