What is a Community Supported Journalist and Why Did the Coaching Commons Hire One?

Click picture to view video

Our friend, colleague and architect of the Coaching Commons, Andrea J. Lee was there from the beginning as Ruth Ann Harnisch, founding funder of the Commons, discussed the possibility of hiring a professional journalist to exclusively cover the field of coaching.

Once the community supported journalist idea (CSJ) made the jump to reality, Andrea had the brilliant notion of interviewing Ruth Ann and new CSJ Mark Joyella about this innovative concept. Andrea included the interview, both video and in print in her newsletter this week, Creating What Matters. We have reprinted the interview here with Andrea's permission.

Editor's Note: In our first Coaching Commons newsletter, (July 18, 2008) Ruth Ann Harnisch wrote a post that boldly asked the coaching community: "What Are We Not Looking @?" How profound and exciting, that not even a year later, we welcome a coaching-dedicated journalist who will explore this topic- and much more!

So Maybe You're Wondering, Who's the New Guy?
Meet Mark Joyella

Perhaps you've noticed the new guy unpacking boxes, botching new names, and generally looking lost as he strolls the Coaching Commons in search of a bathroom and a cup of coffee. Well, I am that guy, and I hope you'll bear with me as I get settled.

If you haven't already heard, I'm your new Community Supported Journalist (has a nice fills-out-the-business-card-with-distinction sound to it, wouldn't you say?), which may have you asking yourself, "What is a community supported journalist, and what does it mean to me?"
Excellent question. Read story.

June Quote: What Do Journalists Know?

"The smarter the journalists are, the better off society is. For to a degree, people read the press to inform themselves-and the better the teacher, the better the student body."

Insight from the Very First "Coaching Reporter:" An Interview with David Goldsmith
By Mark Joyella

When the Coaching Commons appointed its first Community Supported Journalist, David Goldsmith was one of the first to comment, offering support to the rookie reporter in uncertain terms: "I'm thrilled you are on board to cover the coaching profession!"

Goldsmith knows the challenges of reporting on the coaching profession. He is founder and Senior Partner of The Goldsmith Group, is a Master Certified Coach and was publisher of the Coaching Insider, an online publication that grew at its height to 5,000 subscribers before ultimately closing in the face of declining revenue. "We had some worthwhile enterprise pieces and did a good job," Goldsmith said. Read more.

Do Coaches Have Coaches?
By Linda Ballew

Forgive me for asking the obvious.

It was just one of those assumptions - like doctors don't give themselves medication....do they? What's the old cliche? The doctor who treats himself has a fool for a patient.

So would a coach who coaches him/herself have a fool for a client? And is it a good idea to coach yourself? We've had an ongoing (and quite fascinating) discussion here at the Commons about whether self-coaching is even POSSIBLE. (Read comments)

Which brings me back to my original query. Coach, do you have a coach? Read story.

Giving the Gift of Coaching: Coaching The Global Village

World-class coaches and consultants at Coaching the Global Village are partnering with non-governmental organizations (NGO's) and non-profit social agencies to incorporate coaching skills into their work to reach target outcomes.

These efforts involve individuals, leaders of non-governmental groups as well as localized leaders of the community bringing the 'coach-approach' to developing countries.

Coaching the Global Village started as an idea shared among a few friends. Then it picked up steam and is now increasing our outreach, training global leaders in 'villages' wherever the need is big to use the coach approach to empower the local citizens and the leaders of nongovernmental organizations (NGO'S).
